I have just bought a gas barbeque and I am a total novice with such things. I would like to add woodchips to reproduce the effect of a charcoal grill, but I don't know if this is possible or if there are any drawbacks (such as mess?). I wonder if anyone can advise me?

Sure….Just make sure you put the woodchips in some sort of container. They make little wood chip boxes for gas grills. Or you can just soak the chips, wrap them in heavy foil and the poke holes in the foil with a fork.
Yes. They make a metal box that you put the chips in and you set the box on the grate. You need to be careful when removing it otherwise you’ll get ash all over.
well they sell this little metal box that you put the woodchips in with water then place it on one side of the grill it heats up and gives you the taste your looking for
Or you could just barbecue the wood and eat it.
I do this all of the time…wet the chips, wrap them in aluminum foil, poke holes in the foil…and thrown it in the grill…great smokey flavor.
i don’t think you can, but i have seen some cooking shows where they put the wood chips in a aluminum tray so they aren’t touching the flames.
The difference in a gas grill and a charcoal grill is the source of the heat that cooks your food. A gas grill is considered more convenient and less messy by some, but I still prefer a charcoal fire. What effect are you looking for?
Most people use wood chips like hickory and mesquite in a gas grill to help flavor what they are cooking. The wood is soaked and put in a tray so it smokes. If this is what you want to do it will work fine.
I have 2 cast iron wood chip burners with slotted lids. They work very well with wet chips inside, placing them over the sear zone prior to cooking. They can be purchased at Canadian Tire for several dollars each.
