Gas Grill Question – How Do We Tell How Much Propane Is In The Tank?

The tank on our gas grill does not have a guage to indicate how much gas is left in it. How do we tell how full or empty it is?

They sell a sticker that goes on the outside of the tank. It can tell you where the level is at by the temp of the metal. The propane shows up as being colder. I have heard of using water but never tried it. I use the sticker.

the tank is much heavier when full but your best bet is to get a gauge. They are cheap and just stick to the side of the tank and tell you roughly how much gas is in the tank.

I just pick it up and swish it around.

Buy a cheap bathroom scale and keep the tank on it. When it runs empty, mark the weight with a sharpie. Then in the future, you just look at the scale and that will tell you how much more you have to go.

I have yet to find an accurate propane gas gauge. The most reliable way to judge a tank’s fullness is to weigh it. Figure out how much your tank weighs when both empty and full, and you can interpolate from there. Some grills have a spring-type scale supporting the tank and those at least give you a notion of whether the tank is closer to full or to empty.
I have found the best solution is simply to obtain another tank. If you always have a full spare, you never need to worry about runing out of gas.
