I just purchased a barbeque and in the details portion of the packet it said that my barbeque had 50,000 btu's, I was wondering what it meant and stood for.

btu = British thermal unit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BTU
British Thermal Unit is a unit of measuring the heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water 1 degree F. Basically, the higher the BTU the faster you will be able to cook your meats. If you have a large grilling surface area but not enough BTU’s then you will waste a lot of gas trying to get your food cooked. And on the other side, if you have too small of a grilling surface with too high of a BTU rating then you will have a hard time not burning your food.
Btus= British Thermal Units = The amount of heat energy needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree. The more btus you have means you will be filling your tanks more often.
It’s a measure of the energy the grill produces. The more BTUs the more ‘powerful’ the grill will cook.
